Outdoor childcare environments in urban spaces have tremendous influence on the development of preschoolers. Nonetheless, most research has focused on the interior amenities of childcare and education facilities since preschoolers spend more time within them. The research analyzes the physical and spatial factors of the urban contexts around childcare centers, regarding types of youth harmful facilities, attributes of bordering roads, and accessibility to open green spaces. These factors are classified into the following aspects: usages of and harmful facilities around the buildings, attributes of bordering roads, and accessibility to open green spaces. The results demonstrate that some preschools are exposed to various unsafe and youth-harmful environmental factors such as being adjacent to wide roads with high speed limits and being near factories or adult entertainment facilities. Plans for more dispersed small-scale green spaces may encourage preschoolers to extend activities from indoor institutions. Moreover, it is crucial to consider the surrounding environment when planning for additional extensions and improvement of existing preschools, and to provide policy guidelines which reflect such considerations.
